Sticking to a cut-and-dry diet plan can be tough. But when your daily to-do list involves a slew of photo-ops in front of the unforgiving camera lens, we’re guessing divine inspiration comes through from the powers that be. That, and dollops of determination as in the case of gym bunnies Sonam Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra.
As actors, their career graphs couldn’t be more different from each other, but when it comes to healthy diets, the duo concur that milk doesn’t gel well with their metabolism. “It would have been really easy for me to starve myself and eat bland food to lose weight. But I get bored of a new diet or gym in three days,” concedes Parineeti. So how did she settle on one to get her into the fittest shape of her life? “I was eating healthy but still putting on weight, so someone recommended this doctor (at an Austrian detox centre). What they do there is completely cleanse and reboot your system. Now I know which foods suit me and which ones are harder to digest (milk, eggs),” she explains.
Sonam’s dietician, Radhika Karle discovered that her sensitive stomach couldn’t digest certain foods and that served as the inspiration for the actor to try going vegan. The milk in her coffee and the curd she’d have with each meal was consequently knocked out of her diet.
So what do you replace it with? We turned to diet guru Namita Jain for answers. “Cutting milk out of your diet is easy for non-vegetarians as they get their quota of protein from meat anyway. For vegetarians, compensating the loss of nutrients can be an uphill task.
“If you must prune milk out of your diet, replace it with soya products. Tofu and soy milk will have you catch up on your prescribed dose of proteins and calcium,” explains Namita.
No matter what your dietary goal, always remember that the solution lies in balance. “People ask me what I’ve given up eating, and the answer is nothing; I know my body type and plan my meals accordingly. I eat everything but I know how to balance it out now,” chimes Parineeti.
