6 beauty trends from 2007 that are making a major comeback

The ultimate 'Then and now'

  • Throwbacks are always fun, especially when revisiting old trends in beauty and fashion (unless you're talking about overplucked eyebrows, because that's major N-O). We went on a #throwback trip of our own and dug into old ELLE archives, from a decade ago, to find out what trends were making news back then, and discovered that the major beauty trends from good old 2007 are all set to make a comeback in 2017.

If 2016 was all about 90s revival, 2017 is all about the 80s. We've got frosted eye shadow, back combed hair and shimmery, jewel tones dominating the Spring/Summer'17 looks for the year. We've rounded up the trends (in the gallery above) from ELLE archives in 2007 that you should definitely get behind in 2017.

  • Holographic lips

Beauty bloggers on Instagram have been obsessed with holographic lips or unicorn lips, as they're more popularly known across the internet, ever since they debuted late in 2016. But as it turns out, they were already making waves on the runway back in 2007.

Pro beauty tip from ELLE's June '07 issue: Apply blue glitter in the centre of burgundy lips to plump them up.

  • Frosted eye shadow

If we have to pick one beauty trend that defined the early 2000s, it would have to be frosted eyes. And chunky layers, but that's something we'd all like to forget. And as seen at Delpozo and Jill Stuart's SS'17 runway presentations, frosted eyes are back.

Pro tip from ELLE's January 2007 issue: Keep make-up to a minimum for a more romantic effect.

  • Graphic rainbow eyes

Before we saw (and loved) them at Fendi's F/W 2016-17 show, rainbow eyes were making their mark a decade ago at Zandra Rhodes' SS'07 show. Refer to our cheat sheet if you want to give them a go this season.

Pro tip from ELLE's March 2007 issue: Layer 2-3 complementary colours on the eye for a kaleidoscopic effect.

  • Smudged and smokey eyes

If you've spent hours practising how to apply the perfect cat-eye, then we've got some bad news for you. Smudged eyeliner and grey shadow to create a smokey effect is the way to go in 2017, as seen on the runway for Carolina Herrera, Chloe and Rag and Bone for their SS'17 collections. Back in 07, grey was the hottest colour of the F/W season.

Pro tip from ELLE's November issue: Skip the smudged eyeliner and create a subtle smokey eye look with grey shadow on the lids, blended with black. Add a little shimmer with pearl blue shadow in the mix.

  • Metallic eyes and lashes

Bright eyes and lashes were all the rage back in 2007 and it looks like the glimmer of metallics is not going to dull in 2017 too. You can try a subtle shimmery effect like the one seen with metallic sequins at Fausto Pugilisi's SS'17 show, or go bold with shimmery eye shadow on the lids like Aigner.

Pro tip from ELLE's January 2007 issue: Apply glitter with a damp cotton swab, on lid and lashes, to prevent sparkles from falling.

  • Raw and glossy skin

Looks like heavy contour is going to take a backseat and the natural, glossy look that we loved a decade back is going to be the look to try in 2017. Freshly scrubbed faces, like the ones seen at Isabel Marant's SS'17 show, with subtle highlights are making the case for going au naturel this season.

Pro tip from ELLE's March 2007 issue: For a fresh look, go pink. A marshmallow hue on the cheeks is perfect for a flushed and natural look.
