Finally, a fun cardio workout for people who hate cardio

If you’re one of those people who hits snooze on their 6am morning run until it’s time to wake up for your 9am breakfast, I feel you. Not to say you’re unfit; you want to work out; the 6am alarm can attest to your good intentions. Maybe you’re super fit and wake up on Sundays to run a 10K and do juice cleanses, in which case you’re making the rest of us look bad. Regardless of which category you fall into, mixing up your workout (or lack of) is a requirement. Shock your body and other things you hear your trainer yelling at you before you give up on your plank position.

After the Zumba wave that still has you humming dance remixes of Bollywood songs, the next workout trend to try is trampoline fitness. Like Zumba, it does a good job of hiding all the exercise-y bits with dance moves and music. Unlike Zumba, the trampoline absorbs some of the high impact shock found in most cardio workouts. Which means all that pressure from bouncing around is minimised on your joints. The class is supposed to kill up to 1000 calories per hour and get your endorphins pumping.

While I’m not sure if I burned those calories after an hour, I did feel more energetic than when I started the class. The bouncing tends to wake you up and the constant movement keeps you up. There are aerobic style variations which the instructor directs you to switch to or speed up to accordingly while she guides you through each motion. At some point, I felt like my organs had been rearranged and my levels of enthusiasm were wavering, but that was more to do with my personal issues with gravity and fitness than the class. I found that different muscles were being engaged as compared to other forms of cardio. And with constant hand motions, your arms also get a decent work out. Each round is designed to work out both sides of your body while in motion. The trampoline class is finished off with a cool down and some standard exercises using your own body weight.
