Everybody’s talking about Google’s feminist emojis

A disgruntled Amy Butcher weighed in on the limited representation of women in the standard emoji set available on smartphones in a New York Times article: Men were serving on the police force, working construction and being Santa. Meanwhile, on our phones, it was Saturday at the Mall of America — women shopping while men wrote the checks.”

Google upped its game and presented a set of 13 new emojis to the Unicode Consortium (the emoji ministry!).

All the femojis (feminist emojis) show women in a range of roles that go beyond Princess and flamenco dancer – they cover the health care, science, education, farming and construction spectrum. We’re particularly excited about the one they’ve designed in homage to David Bowie, with a lightning streak across her forehead.

They appealed to the Consortium to support “a system of emoji design that can accommodate a broader gender spectrum.” Since Mark Davis of Google is also the president (and co-founder) of Unicode Consortium, we’re hoping this gets the nod. Take the poll below and tell us which of these are you most likely to use. Choose wisely, you only get one vote.
