Kalki Koechlin's powerful new short film will make you rethink the way you use privilege

You don't need to be a millionaire to make a change

The outspoken Kalki Koechlin has never shied away from championing her views on women's empowerment and gender equality, and has long been an advocate for children's education in rural areas. Which is why we weren't surprised at all to see her as the protagonist in Oriflame's latest short film. Titled #BeautifulChange, the video aims to inspire women and men around the country to spread the light of education with those who are less privileged.

In the film, Kalki plays a well-off entrepreneur whose life is serendipitously changed when her househelp arrives to work one day, her young daughter in tow. When Kalki asks why the young girl isn't in school, the maid informs her that she is unable to educate all three children — one daughter and two sons — so her husband decided to withdraw the daughter's admission from school so that she could help her mother with her work cleaning other people's homes.

This sets off a chain reaction that ultimately results in Kalki using her own privilege to empower the maid and her child. With her confidence buoyed, the young girl asks her mother "All I need is a chance."

The video implores readers to recognise that everybody has the power to effect change, even with the simplest of thoughtful actions.
