How Kareena’s yoga teacher Anshuka Parwani uses the ancient practice to keep her clients stress-free

There is no written record of who invented Yoga. In 5,000 years of yoga history, the term “yoga” has gone through several transitions pertaining to current culture, exchanging the loincloth for a sports bra and leggings.

Yoga is for everyone — for the overweight, the young, the old. It is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity, enhance strength, flexibility and balance. It also helps in relieving stress and coping with chronic conditions and disabilities. Practising yoga can also help prevent heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, insomnia, thyroid and symptoms of menopause etc.

In this fast-paced concrete jungle we live in today, stress is inescapable. I not only practice Yogalates (a hybrid of yoga and mat Pilates) and FlyFit (aerial fitness), but also restorative yoga. My practice is always a combination of these which helps me tune in. What really assists me while I’m practicing and otherwise going about my day is my Apple Watch which constantly sends me notifications about my heart rate throughout the practice. I realised the fluctuations, as my heart rate would drop in certain asanas, but skyrocket while practicing surya namaskars, ujjayi breath (pranayama), inversions and back bends. It also reminds me to “breathe”.

My celebrity clients understand the benefits of this holistic practice, as their high stress jobs call for them to be extremely fit as well as calm and rested. They all love yoga as it is not only an external workout that leaves them looking fit and with that ‘yoga glow’, but also nourishes their insides, leaving them happier and more at peace. I also love to innovate and want to keep them engaged and loving their practice.
