How Priyanka Chopra learned to accept her skin tone

Priyanka Chopra has never shied away from talking about the problems she faced while growing up in the USA, because of her skin tone. She shared her brush with racism on her last Koffee with Karan episode and has reiterated several times the importance of accepting who you are.

In an interview with Allure magazine, where she is featured along with 40 other women of colour, Priyanka spoke about learning to accept her skin tone and owning it. “Pressures exist and it’s on us to make those pressures not seem important to girls. I’ve achieved what I’ve achieved and skin colour has nothing to do with it — in fact, it might have been an asset. I like the colour of my skin very much,” she says, adding, “It’s so primitive that people are judged on the basis of the colour of their skin. I mean, it’s skin. We all have it.”

The Quantico star also talks about the importance of representation in media, “(My skin) is as complicated as I am. When I was growing up, I didn’t see anyone on TV who looked like me. I adored Sarah Michelle Gellar. I wanted to be the Slayer! I’ve been working since I was 17, and initially (beauty) companies didn’t have colours that matched Asian or Indian skin. I definitely have access to products that are specifically for my skin (now). But it happened pretty recently, I think — about 10 years (ago).”

The fact that Priyanka Chopra is now a major star in both India and America makes her feel more responsible to be a role model to women around the world, “I feel a sense of responsibility with young girls everywhere — they can achieve anything that they want to do. There are so many girls around the world that are told that they can’t live their lives or they can’t behave a certain way because they’re girls. You know, we have to fight the fight ourselves.”

Priyanka Chopra’s go-to beauty trick

One of Priyanka Chopra’s favourite make-up looks is a bright bold lip, allowing the star to play up her most prominent feature.
