Award-winning crime-drama Soni is going to be your new Netflix favourite

Director Ivan Ayer’s debut feature film Soni is all set to premiere on Netflix this week. The film’s titular character (Geetika Vidya Ohlyan) is a Delhi sub-inspector who, along with her superintendent Kalpana (Saloni Batra), fight crimes against women in the city. But Soni’s anger issues result in Kalpana getting transferred.

A nuanced take on gender inequalities in middle-class Indian society, the movie seeks to explore the unconscious biases that still exist amongst us.

“We live in a society that has accepted to adjust and bear patriarchal norms and gender biases, and I believe that the release of the film on a global service like Netflix will help the voices of my characters reach a large and diverse audience base eloquently,” said Ayr in the press note.

Why we’re excited

The crime-drama explores the various hierarchies and dynamics informed by gender in our society. The film has already premiered at film festivals across the world like the 75th Venice Film Festival, the Mumbai Film Festival, and the BFI London Film Festival, and has been widely appreciated by critics globally. It has also won the Oxfam Award on Gender Equality, and the Best Film Award at the Pingyao International Film Festival.

You can stream Soni on Netflix on 18 January 2019.
