This summer, I’ve embarked on a mission to tackle the chaos in my closet and fully embrace the art of decluttering. While I’ve heard whispers about the transformative power of tidying up, I’ll admit, I’m a bit sceptical. But, why not give it a shot, right?
Every couple of months, I find myself staring into my overflowing closet, a mix of new purchases and neglected items that never quite find their proper place. It’s time to reclaim control, bring some order back into my wardrobe and, who knows, maybe even my life.
As someone who once idolised fashion icons like Rebecca Bloomwood from Confessions of a Shopaholic and Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, I was taught to hold onto every piece of clothing like it was a precious gem.
However, I’ve since undergone a style evolution and am now embracing a more practical approach to my closet clean-out journey – it’s all about embracing the garage sale mentality and letting go of what no longer serves me. Although, I might hold onto my green scarf a little bit longer (IYKYK).
So, I’ve put together this 5-step easy-to-follow guide that worked wonders for me.
Step 1: Set Aside Dedicated Time
Block off a chunk of time in your schedule specifically for this task. Having dedicated time will help you stay focused and committed to completing the process.
Step 2: Empty Your Closet
Take everything out of your closet and lay it where you can see it. This step allows you to assess each item individually and decide whether to keep, donate, or discard it.
Step 3: Declutter with Purpose
As you go through each item, ask yourself if it brings you joy, serves a purpose, or if you’ve used it within the past year. If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go. Be ruthless in your decluttering to prevent unnecessary items from accumulating again.
Step 4: Organise and Prioritise
Once you’ve decided what to keep, organise your closet in a way that makes sense to you. Group similar items together and consider using storage solutions such as bins or baskets to maximise space and keep things tidy. Prioritise frequently worn items by placing them within easy reach.
Step 5: Maintain Regularly
To prevent your closet from overflowing again, make it a habit to regularly assess your wardrobe and remove items that no longer serve you. A good rule of thumb is to do a mini declutter every few months to keep things in check.
