Payal Khandwala’s limited-edition festive-wear is immensely practical

Jewel tones and Payal Khandwala are inseparable – and that works out brilliantly for the festive season. “Colour is my thing”, says Khandwala, who’s employed vibrant hues – deep blue, pop purple, and bright vermillion – in her festive-wear line for FW ’15.

The collection consists of 16 looks made with traditional Benarasi brocades, but the silhouettes are strictly contemporary. “I like going to weddings, and dressing up. But at some point I realised everyone looks and dresses the same,” says Khandwala. The problem is amplified when you’re planning what to wear to a destination wedding: “You want something that’s traditional but doesn’t make you stand out inappropriately,” she adds.

Her line addresses that conundrum with lehengas with pockets, jewel-toned oversized shirts, brocade column dresses, and asymmetrical jackets. It lends itself to many mix-and-match possibilities and some pieces – like the shirts and culottes – can just easily be incorporated into the everyday wardrobe.
