It’s said wine is good for you, in limited quantities of course. The reason behind this is the antioxidants that are present in it. And while we’d love to pour a glass (or few!) every now and then, what if we told you, it’s easier to get its antioxidant benefits for your skin without getting tipsy? We’re talking about resveratrol. The up-and-coming ingredient that’s finding its way into skincare products for its many benefits.
So, what is resveratrol exactly and what is it derived from, you’re wondering? Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant, typically found in grapes, red wine, peanuts, and certain berries such as blueberries, raspberries and mulberries. It has antioxidant properties and neutralises free radicals that can damage the skin. It comes in the form of powders and supplements that can be ingested, but more recently, it has been infused in a number of skincare products, such as creams, serums, oils and moisturisers that can be applied topically.
We connected with expert Dr Kiran Sethi, MD Skin & Aesthetic Specialist, Founder of Isya Aesthetics to find out more about the ingredient’s potential and skincare benefits. She says, “A part of polyphenols, resveratrol protects the cells against damage that leads to cellular aging. This protective ingredient also balances the skin’s barrier to make the skin texture soft, smooth and damage free. By stimulating healthy cell proliferation, resveratrol also improves cellular function and collagen synthesis, to nullify the damage caused by free radicals.”
In fact, a 2010 study showed that resveratrol can target the free radical molecules that lead to the effects of skin aging. Another study in 2014 went on to prove that applying resveratrol topically significantly improved wrinkles, fine lines, and skin elasticity in just 12 weeks!
Dr Kiran also points out that resveratrol is a good substitute for Vitamin C, so we ask her to elaborate. “People are also now realizing that vitamin C is not the holy grail, it does not suit everyone,” she says sharing that Indian skin can be very sensitive to vitamin C, and resveratrol is thus, a great alternative to reap the same benefits. “Vitamin C can sometimes lead to irritant skin reactions in some people, especially in the skin of colour, as it is more sensitive and melanin rich. Resveratrol is an excellent alternative for such people as you only need half the amount of resveratrol to get the same effects of vitamin C, provided it is in a stable form.”
Dr Kiran shares that resveratrol is generally considered safe for all skin types, but she advises against using it along with vitamin C and AHAs. “The reason being resveratrol needs a pH of 7 to be effective, while vitamin C and AHAs have a pH that is around 3 to 3.5. So invariably, if you combine both you’ll be inactivating one, which defeats the purpose,” she explains.
