‘The dog is not going to die, right?’ This question always pops in our head whenever we spot a furry friend in a film. The movie or the show may have some of the biggest names as the lead, but every time these adorable creatures show up, our hearts can’t help but melt a little for them. For me, as a dog sister, you can sell me a movie by just saying it has an adorable pet in it; I wouldn’t even ask what’s the plot. These four-legged creatures hold so much power over me that I would rather watch grass grow than watch the music video of Happier by Marshmallow again in my life and cry about that dog!
All these furry friends in films captivate a lot of us because the way they embody innocence, loyalty, and unconditional love resonates deeply with people. It doesn’t matter how long is their screen time; they often layer layers of warmth and humour, creating an emotional connection that enhances the storytelling. With their expressive faces and endearing behaviours, they can evoke a wide range of emotions, from laughter to tears, making them integral to creating memorable and relatable cinematic experiences.
Their ability to convey complex feelings without words allows them to bridge gaps between characters and viewers, fostering empathy and a feeling I can’t put in words. Over the years, we have seen some of the most adorable dogs and cats taking over our screens, from the Bailey from A Dog’s Journey to the iconic Tuffy from Hum Apke Hai Kon.
Scroll down below to know some of our favourite pup-stars who have made us go aww:
1. Dogpool from Deadpool & Wolverine
After being saved by a family, Peggy, a 5-year-old Chinese-crested and pug mix with a protruding tongue, was chosen to play Wade Wilson’s sidekick Dogpool in the Marvel blockbuster. Peggy has the title of Britain’s Ugliest Dog in 2023, which is quite weird to say, but as Deadpool aka Ryan Reynolds himself says, “we are not telling her that because she is a 10 in our hearts.”
2. Snoop from Anatomy of a Fall
It is fair to say that Messi the dog who plays Snoop in the movie stole everyone’s heart this awards season. His character plays an important role in the film’s climax as the promotion. P.S. He was also awarded the Palm Dog at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
3. Frodo from A Quiet Place: Day One
If you plan to catch this film, you will discover that Frodo the cat is an unlikely hero we all are waiting for. FYI, the cat doesn’t die in the movie.
4. Goose from Captain Marvel
In this 2019 film, Goose—named after the legendary figure from Top Gun—made her screen debut as a peaceful earth cat. Carol eventually discovers, however, that Goose is actually a flerken—a hostile extraterrestrial that can eat humans whole.
5. Cosmo from Guardians of the Galaxy
Director James Gunn opted to make Cosmo a female in the MCU as a homage to Laika (the first dog to be sent into space). She is a good dog who loves listening to The Carpenters.
6. Charlie from 777 Charlie
Played a dog whose name is actually Charlie in real life. This cute pup will make you cry and laugh at her antics and emotions.
7. Entertainment from It’s Entertainment
One of the most entertaining stars on the list, this golden retriever has better comic timing than some of the popular actors.
8. All the dogs from the John Wick Franchise
This list would have been incomplete without mentioning all the pups from the John Wick franchise.
9. Pluto Mehra from Dil Dhadakne Do
Voiced by Amir Khan to narrate the storyline of the film, Pluto Mehra was the star of his family.
10. Enzo from The Art Of Racing In The Rain
Funny, loyal, protective, and smart—Enzo the goldie is everything we could want in a main character. If he were a human, he would definitely be that dimpled, bright-eyed, grinning best friend who slaps the protagonist on the back and tells him everything’s going to be okay.
