Even if you aren’t good at spotting red flags in men, you need to know how to do it with your beauty routine and beauty products. Unlike the European Union, which has one of the strictest cosmetic regulation laws in the world, the products sold in Indian markets are not nearly well regulated. This means that certain harmful ingredients can reach your skincare vanity through products. We have compiled a list of such red flag beauty ingredients that you need to label check for before buying.
1. Parabens – Preservative
Present in a multitude of skincare products, parabens are artificial preservatives that are used to lengthen the shelf life of beauty products. Since cosmetic products use a lot of minerals and perishable formulas, [arabens are added to avoid spoilage and mild on the products. The ingredient itself is quite harmful to the skin as to can lead to cracking, swelling and a damaged skin barrier if used for a long time. Opt for products with natural preservatives can make sure to follow the expiry date on the label.
2. Synthetic Fragrance – Additive
FYI, the artificial fragrance in your cherry lip balm is making your lips darker! Usually just mentioned as ‘Fragrance’ or ‘Parfum’ on the label, synthetic fragrances can lead to skin irritation, inflammation, sensitivity and darkening. Formulated from petroleum or crude oil, these chemicals should be a big no-no in your routine; especially if you have sensitive skin. the trick is to go to fragrance-free products, as some natural fragrances can cause sensitivity as well.
3. SLS/SLES – Foaming Agent
If your beauty product foams up, chances are they contain SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) in them. A foaming agent also found in clothing detergents, SLS/SLES can strip your skin and hair of essential moisture and make them super dry. It is also an unnecessary irritant added to products – cleansers and shampoos without them are equally effective at adding a good cleansing action to your routine.
4. Formaldehyde – Preservative
yet another sneaky preservative that is often added to skincare products, formaldehyde releases like DMDM, hydantoin, Methylene glycol and 3 dioxanes are label red flags to watch out for. Often found in nail polishes and eyelash glue, formaldehyde exposure can lead to irritation, itching and scaling of your skin. Formaldehyde releasers in hair care products are especially harmful; exposure to them in a salon environment is a specific cause for concern.
5. Talc – Mineral Additive
usually found in setting powders, blushes, eyeshadows and event matte lipsticks, talc is used to absorb moisture from the surface where it is applied on. It is also used to lighten pigment in products, which is why it is so widely used. But talc is quite harmful when used in beauty products, the particles can rub against your skin and cause irritation. It is also not recommended for people with respiratory issues; meaning it is best to go talc-free with your beauty.
