New Products, Newer Ingredients
1. Ingredient: Edelweiss, Brand: The Body Shop
This much-loved personal care brand has recently launched a skincare range infused with the
the goodness of the Edelweiss flower, which is known for its remarkable antioxidant properties. What is this flower though, you ask? The Edelweiss flower is a resilient one that is found growing in brutal Alpine conditions of high winds, extreme snow and rain, yet it thrives. It protects and repairs itself, thanks to its natural antioxidants, including Leontopodic acid, which is only produced when the flower is in distress. Extract from this particular flower is said to be 43% more powerful than retinol! That makes it incredibly effective in protecting the skin’s barrier. In this, The Body Shop range, Edelweiss stem cells and Edelweiss extract, which contain powerful antioxidants, are combined with natural-origin peptides that protect the skin from external aggregators. The vegan-certified skincare collection includes a daily serum concentrate, eye serum, sheet mask, liquid peel, intense smoothing cream and more.
2. Ingredient: Acacia, Brand: Juice Beauty
One of Juice Beauty’s newer products is the Revitalizing Acacia + Rose Powder Mask, created in collaboration with Kate Hudson. This powder mask promises to hydrate and clarify the skin with antioxidant-rich, high-tech plant powders for luminous skin that appears smooth and radiant. It also offers a customizable experience where one can create a mask consistency as light or rich as they like—thinner applications provide gentle benefits, while thicker applications provide a more potent experience. While we all know the many benefits of rose petal powder which is rich in Vitamin C and helps brighten skin, another key ingredient in the mix is acacia powder, an antioxidant-rich plant with skin-boosting properties that helps lock in moisture. Acacia also gives the skin a lifting effect and improves its overall texture. It even supports natural fibres such as collagen and elastin, and can thus help smooth out wrinkles, leaving the skin soft and supple.
3. Ingredient: Frankincense, Brand: Neal’s Yard Remedies
The UK-based brand features not one, but two frankincense collections—Rejuvenating Frankincense & Frankincense Intense, where both use the world’s first certified organic Boswellia sacra frankincense from Oman. Frankincense helps to reduce the appearance of tired skin and hydrates and revives fatigued skin for a rejuvenated, fresher complexion. Boswellic acid gives frankincense oil its anti-inflammatory, skin-healing properties. Its toning and rejuvenating properties help invigorate the complexion and repair skin damage. Frankincense oil also has a rejuvenating effect, especially on mature skin where it minimises wrinkles and fine lines, and reduces the appearance of scars and blemishes. Neal Yard’s Remedies’ Rejuvenating Frankincense collection includes a facial mist, hydrating cream, face wash, toner, facial oil, etc. while the Frankincense Intense range is targeted at mature skin and consists of a hand treatment serum, eye cream, age-defying cream, hydrating essence, cleansing melt and more.
4. Ingredient: Pink Aloe, Brand: Faces Canada
Green aloe has been used since ancient times to address skin issues such as burns, wounds, and eczema. Even today in the world of skincare, aloe vera is known for its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. But it is ‘pink aloe’ that is the surprise new ingredient we were not expecting! Part of south Korean beauty and skincare regimes, pink aloe vera is the latest skincare secret that is emerging as a big trend. Pink aloe vera is supposed to be a powerhouse of hydration, antioxidants, vitamins and other good-for-skin constituents. But what is pink aloe vera exactly? Believe it or not, when oxidation of green aloe vera takes place, it turns pink!
Pink aloe vera is extracted at a high temperature with a freeze-drying technique. This technique allows controlled oxidation and changes the colour of aloe to pink. Along with the colour change, it also makes the aloe gel significantly more potent, boosting the emodin content and antioxidant levels which makes pink aloe much more efficacious and more soothing as compared to green aloe. The Faces Canada Pink Aloe range
includes a hydrating face wash, a pore tightening toner and an oil-free day gel.
5. Ingredient: Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-Yuen Seed Extract, Brand: One Thing
While the name is quite a mouthful, this seed (also known as adlay, adlay millet or Chinese pearl barley), native to Southeast Asia and Northern China, contains a large number of amino acids and is packed with calcium, iron and vitamin B. Its extracts, when used on the skin, help remove dead cells and impurities from the skin and moisturise and calm it. It also helps control acne breakouts and excess sebum production. The coix seed extract clarifies skin and reduces pigmentation. It improves skin texture and is a low pH extract, so it helps balance the skin’s pH as well. Its antioxidant properties protect skin from free radical damage. One Thing uses organic, pesticide-free seeds grown in South Korea to create this 100% plant-derived extract concentrate. Its lightweight, watery texture makes it suitable for all skin types, especially oily skin or dehydrated skin. It can be used as a toner to add moisture to the skin, or combined with other products as well to boost their effects.
