This year is the tenth anniversary of Ralph Lauren as the official outfitter for Wimbledon. They’ve nattily dressed everyone from umpires to ball boys and stylish spectators to champions for the tournament. (You can spot them by the giant Polo logos emblazoned on their chests.) The lines – all piped navy blazers and classic pleated white skirts – are available in stores. In many ways, it’s a game-set-match made in heaven: RL is the poster boy of preppy American sportswear, which itself references the country-club whites that Wimbledon has always been known for. (Their lilywhite advertising campaigns for Wimbledon, shot in black-and-white, are perhaps a little too invested in that ’30s style. They’re not much of a reflection of the diversity of a sport that, this season, Serena Williams is dominating.)
You’ll see less Ralph on the court itself: though Wimbledon outfits are more restrained than those of other tournaments, thanks to their all-whites rule, players such as Williams, Maria Sharapova, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer still experiment with structure and detail. They’re uniformed by brands such as Stella McCartney and Y-3 Yohji Yamamoto (respectively) for adidas; Uniqlo; Nike, and more.
