Imagine walking into a tarot card session, but instead of a verbal reading, visualise the deck of cards come alive, narrating the answer to your question by taking you into a mystical world. Christian Dior’s Haute Couture 2021 Spring/Summer presentation by Maria Grazia Chiuri took the viewers on a journey to the magical realm.
Taking inspiration from Christian Dior’s association with the divinatory arts, MGC tapped into the visual world of symbolic lexicon with fascinating characters and dressed them in majestic Dior couture. The fashion film was directed by Matteo Garrone and was shot at the Castello di Sammezzano in Tuscany, which played the backdrop to this dark and abstract narration.
The story unfolds with a young mysterious woman, asking an existential question, ‘Who am I?’ to a tarot reader, followed by an expedition where the lady meets the real-life characters from the cards taking her through the various locked levels in the palace, finally introducing her to her one true self.

The characters were dressed to depict the deeper meanings of life. For instance, the Devil was decked in a gold décolletage gown with wings and horn which represented seduction. The Confusing Fool looked eccentric in an embroidered top, tulle skirt, with satin applique and gold gauze shirt. The High Priestess exuded power in a bustier dress and coat in gold and burgundy jacquard. Death defined darkness in a smoke grey pleated gown with a chain-mail veil. The Empress looked regal and showcased authority in a velvet gown elevated with gold zodiac print and an oversized crown. Justice remained true to her character in an olive hand-pleated chiffon gown, with a firm hold on a scale in one hand.
