Tiny sunglasses are bad for your eyes… but celebrities will wear them anyway

In today’s depressing, but not wholly surprising news, doctors have revealed Matrix-style tiny sunglasses aren’t very good at, well, being sunglasses. Much like plastic shoes, this trend, favoured by the rich and famous, may not be ideal for normal people who need their accessories to function fully.

According to Rahul Pandit, MD, an ophthalmologist with the Blanton Eye Institute at Houston Methodist Hospital, they just don’t work very well as sunglasses, “It’s pretty simple” he said, “With smaller frames, more light is going to get around. Larger frames are going to protect you more.”

Andrew Iwach, MD, a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology also pointed out that, “people also tend to wear them lower on the nose…which takes them further away from the eye.” This means teeny-tiny shades leave your eyes exposed to ultra violet light.

Dr Pandit explained that, “Both UVA and UVB light can hit the eye and cause different types of damage.” These damages include long-time problems of vision loss, the development of cataracts and growths on the surface of the eye.

And short term, you can get photokeratitis, a.k.a. snow blindness, a.k.a sunburn on your eye balls which Dr. Iwach describes it as, “quite painful.” As well as blurry vision, watery eyes and redness, which should be fine if treated quickly (by a Dr).

To avoid these mishaps larger lenses are ideal, as well as making sure the sunglasses you are wearing are from a trusted brand which label their UV protection.

Also, you could just become very high-maintenance and wear them inside, as celebrities do.
