Screenwriter Gazal Dhaliwal writes to the one she cannot define, Doris George
Here is the text:
My dear Doe,
Your presence in my life is such a timeless constant that it’s hard to point out when our friendship began. Was it that one evening in college when you were upset over something and I went to drop you to your place? Or when we became each other’s first colleagues in this then-daunting city? Or perhaps it was on the day I’d got my ears pierced and eyebrows done for the first time…and you reassured me that I looked nice. You can never know how much that meant to me at the very beginning of my transition.
I remember we took this photograph in a Delhi winter 11 years back. We hadn’t met in a long while, and even there, we hardly got any time to catch up since you were busy shooting.
I guess that’s why this photograph reminds me that through all of life’s busy-ness and rigmarole, a few moments with you are all I need to know that I’m going to be fine, that it will all work out.
I have often felt that I don’t have an apt word to define you. ‘Flatmate’ is technical; ‘Best friend’ feels hardly adequate; ‘soulmate’ sounds pretentious…
So, I guess I’ll just call you My Home.
I love you.
Your Gunnu
