We Used AI to Uncover the Must-Have Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends

As a self-proclaimed fashion girlie, I’m always on the lookout for trends. Anything new, exciting, and fleeting will inevitably make it to my wardrobe. For lack of better judgement or simply shopaholic tendencies, I will pick up a trend and make it my whole personality for at least a month. Then, unfortunately, the trend will find a spot in the back of my closet until fashion revives it again.

Part of my job is spotting and predicting trends before anyone else does. While I do great at it, some might say Artificial Intelligence (AI) is here to take my career. So, today, I decided to test it out and ask AI to predict the Autumn and Winter fashion trends for 2024 (and I shamelessly judged them). Over to AI.

1. Sustainable and Ethical Fashion:

AI

The focus on sustainability continues to grow, with more brands adopting eco-friendly materials and practices. Expect recycled fabrics, biodegradable materials, and transparent supply chains.

2. Maximalism:

Bold colours, extravagant prints, and layered textures might make a statement. This could involve mixing patterns, rich embellishments, and opulent fabrics like velvet and brocade.

3. Tech-Infused Wearables:

As technology becomes more integrated into everyday life, expect smart textiles and wearable tech to be more prominent, offering functionality alongside style.

4. Retro Revival:

Fashion often cycles back, and 2024 might see a resurgence of styles from the 1980s and 1990s, like oversized silhouettes, neon accents, and vintage sportswear.

5. Tailored Outerwear:

Structured coats and blazers with a modern twist could dominate. Look for oversized fits, innovative cuts, and unique detailing.

6. Neutral and Earthy Tones:

While maximalism is on the rise, there will still be a demand for versatile, understated pieces in earthy shades and muted tones, offering timeless elegance.

7. Artisanal Craftsmanship:

Handmade and artisanal items that showcase traditional techniques and craftsmanship might gain attention, emphasising the value of unique, well-crafted pieces.

8. Gender Fluidity:

Fashion’s move towards inclusivity continues, with more unisex collections and pieces that challenge traditional gender norms.

AI would be the perfect candidate if generic and vague needed a new definition. After a verbal sparring match (where words in all caps were exchanged) and many prompts were given, ChatGPT finally gave me a list of what I deem actually pass off as trends. However, I’m still unclear on how this generic piece of technology envisions these play out. I guess we’ll see.
