Alia Bhatt Rimple & Harpreet

Gangubai Kathiawadi is already making waves and we have our eyes peeled for all of Alia Bhatt’s looks to promote the film. She’s been partial to white sarees but she’s playing around with textures, fabrics and the designers she’s wearing. She elevated her sartorial game to a whole new level today at the Berlin Film Festival screening of her forthcoming film, Gangubai Kathiawadi. Her style aesthetic oozed elegance and grandeur in a pristine white saree by Rimple & Harpreet.

Reminiscent of actresses in the backdrops of Switzerland, her silk chiffon saree by wedding couture designer duo Rimple & Harpreet is a force to reckon with. Aside from the precision of work and being a symbol of true Indian craftsmanship, the creation perfectly encapsulated the thematic essence and spirit of the character, Gangubai. Wrapped around one of Bollywood’s most talented and beautiful actresses, the diaphanous fabric stood out, adding to the allure of the creation.

The story of this saree coming to life is fascinating. Several man-hours were dedicated to encapsulate the essence of the look and to infuse it with the attitude of Gangubai. A team of master karigars were put into In the making of this beautiful creation,  which features delicately handcrafted embroideries referenced from archival Edwardian and French Lace Shawls. The creation heavily borrows from influences of various types. The embroideries were rendered using jaali-work, shadow embroidery, silk floss threads, mother of pearl paillettes, hand-cut sequins, and imported pearls of varying sizes. The scalloped palla was finished off with a hand-knotted silk dori macramé fringe. The look was capped with a handcrafted minaudière and a plush lamé-pashmina shawl with pearl-work borders to ward off the Berlin chill.

And you simply cannot do grandeur without dressing the man of the hour itself. Rimple and Harpreet also had the opportunity to design for Mr. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, on their momentous day. The label chose to stay true to his understated elegance and created a tonal black sherwani with a tessellated texture inspired from sacred geometry. They crowned the look with a classic ivory kurta and pants. It’s a look he wore easily and was a great showcase of his penchant for beauty in all its forms.

“It was an absolute pleasure to design for Mr Bhansali & Alia Bhatt for the screening of Gangubai Kathiawadi at Berlin film festival. Though we regularly style celebrities on red carpets & movies, this was special because the entire ensemble for Alia has been created exclusively for the screening, keeping her personal style & comfort in consideration. A full team of skilled karigars worked day & night to create the saree in record time.” says Rimple Narula of Rimple & Harpreet
