We’re celebrating all things makeup, skin, and hair with designer Arpita Mehta who’s best known for her young, refreshing, and modern take on traditional silhouettes. Over the years, she has carved out a niche for herself in the industry and has dressed some of the biggest names in Bollywood. When it comes to beauty, Mehta says, “Beauty comes from within and I feel like it all depends on your system. If you take care of your system internally, it shows externally. But having said that, it’s very important to take care of your skin, it’s something that goes hand in hand.” We sat down with her for a quick chat about her beauty routine, favourite products and more, take a look:
ELLE: Take us through your personal skincare routine
Arpita Mehta (AM): My skincare routine has changed a lot from earlier years to now. I’ve struggled with wrong products that didn’t work for me and I think it’s taken me a while to understand what suits my skin and what doesn’t. I keep it minimal; most of the time I just wash my face with water unless it’s sweaty or oily, then I use a face wash. Apart from that, I apply a hyaluronic acid serum on a daily basis, and sometimes a mild, water-based cream. After that, I put on sunscreen by a brand called Coola. I absolutely love it as it’s lightweight. A regular sunscreen becomes too oily on my face so I reach out for water-based products that keep my skin hydrated.

ELLE: What does your everyday make-up routine include?
AM: It includes under-eye care because with stress and Netflix, you do tend to get dark circles (laughs). Along with that, a little blush and lip balm.
ELLE: What is your go-to look for a night out?
AM: I’m a big fan of doing smokey eyes or a thick eyeliner, anything that enhances the eyes. I keep the lips muted with a nude colour or just a tint.
ELLE: Do you remember the first make-up product that you ever bought?
AM: I think it was a kajal.

ELLE: When it comes to presenting your collections, what goes on behind the scenes when deciding the makeup and hair?
AM: Putting together a mood board of hair and makeup is a very exciting part for me when I’m planning my collection— I can experiment and have fun. Clothes are something that I have to make sure turn out perfect but beauty and hair is something that I can have fun with and experiment with trends. Even with my latest collection, we added some pearls for a festive look and did glossy and nude golden eyes.
ELLE: Top 3 products that you can’t live without?
AM: My hyaluronic acid face serum, my Coola sunscreen and a moisturiser. I may walk out without makeup but I will never walk out without doing my skincare. When it comes to makeup products my top 3 picks are mascara, an eye pencil, and a blush.

ELLE: What’s your favourite step in your skincare routine?
AM: Face masks. Love it!
ELLE: How do you take care of your hair?
AM: My hair is a struggle because it’s a bit thin. I love colouring my hair, so I make sure I use the correct products and go for hair spas. I’d love to oil it too but I don’t think I have the patience; I still try to do it once in a while.
ELLE: Lastly, how does it feel to be a part of EBA and how was your experience?
AM: It’s been very exciting! I’ve done a couple of beauty gigs with ELLE but this is the first time that I’m actually judging the products for EBA. I’ve actually come across a lot of interesting ones that I wouldn’t have tried or even known of otherwise.
