If you’ve never heard of Nikita Mhaisalkar, that’s because the designer has been hiding out in Nagpur for the last 15 years, away from India’s fashion hubs of Mumbai and Delhi. But brace yourself to hear a lot more, especially after Mhaisalkar’s standout show that was the best surprise of Lakme Fashion Week so far.
With a colour palette of grey and the occasional burst of bright orange (an homage to her home town), Mhaisalkar presented tailored pants, oversized knits and deconstructed jackets that would look at home in London (where she will soon be retailing) or New York.
As for our favourite look of the show, the designer presented a smart season-appropriate version of the winter sari – silk pleats and a touchable knit pally meant for pulling around your shoulders as the temperate drops, eliminating the need for an extra shawl or jacket.
