Readers of ELLE will vouch for our obvious bias towards easy, fuss-free style. If it takes two hours and three attendants to put together, we want no part of it. It’s this philosophy that dominated the First Cut 2017 showcase, with young labels Aureole, Suparna Som, Sreya Samanta and Third Floor by Saloni Sakaria making their runway debuts.
At Aureole, dropwaist dresses in khadi and soft cottons will be a healthy investment in battling the punishing summer heat. Sreya Samanta stayed true to the earthy roots that define the Kolkata school of fashion design with a line of cotton saris and salwar kameez sets. A lime green co-ord set will please women who aren’t afraid to play with colour. Added bonus: the hue really pops on Indian dusky skintones.
Translucency reigned at Third Floor by Saloni Sakaria, best defined by a cleverly executed take on the salwar kameez, featuring sheer pants under a layered tunic and open jacket.
Those looking for structure should look to Suparna Som’s pleated skirts and co-ord sets. Our favourite: an ecru blouse worn with khaki linen trousers, cinched at the waist to highlight a toned midriff. Think Indian safari suit meets Le Smoking.
We suggest you commit these young labels to memory, because you’ll soon be seeing them everywhere.
