In 2017, we said goodbye to the Instagram eyebrow, highlighter that can direct airport traffic, and the harsh contouring that flooded our feeds for the last 365 days. The make-up trends that are coming your way in 2018 are all about the future of beauty. We asked celebrity make-up artist Patrick Ta, who works with Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid, Camila Cabello, to predict the 5 make-up trends for the new year. Spoiler alert: Lip gloss is back and it’s poppin’. (It’s poppin’.)

Ultra Violet is the colour of the year according to Pantone, and Ta also predicts it will be huge for 2018. “Be prepared to see a boom of violet everywhere,” says Ta. “Especially pretty on the eye’s inner corners.” If you’re not convinced, let Rihanna’s impact convince you to invest in a few purple products. Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman credits Rihanna in part for this year’s colour choice and thinks the singer and beauty mogul embodies violet. “When you think of this colour, she perfectly sums up the originality, the inventiveness, the forward thinking, the non-conformity,” explains Pressman. Channel your inner Rihanna and reach for a few purple Fenty products.

Skin is in. It’s time to put down the contour kits, brushes, sticks, and wands and go for a more natural look. “Go for less make-up and more skin, rather than the over-contoured look,” urges Ta. Tinted moisturizers are a great place to start.
Glow up

“A healthy glow finish on the skin is in, instead of a matte caked or powdery finish,” says Ta. A great way to kick off 2018 is to invest in your skin. Treat yourself to more masks in 2018. “Take care of that skin!” Ta says.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Brights are going to be big in 2018. “Color is back instead of all neutral monochromatic, but used in a clean way, not the over-the-top ’80s way,” says Ta. This is the year to experiment with bright eyeshadow palettes and crazy lips colors you’ve never thought to try.

Head to the OC and let Marissa Cooper and Summer Roberts know lip gloss is back. Ta says lip gloss makes your lips glimmer, “giving your face youthful radiance.” Bonus, lip gloss and shimmery effect goes well with the natural, dewy look you’re already looking for in 2018. Plus, we’ll take any excuse to play Lil Mama’s smash hit again.
