5 Questionable 2000s Trends That Are Back For Good
Drop it like it's hot!
When I think about the 2000s trends, I instantly associate them with the pop-sensations from that decade. It was when dot-com was beginning to boom, and the Y2k aesthetic was everywhere. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian were leading the social scene in their Juicy Couture tracksuits and pink flip phones. Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan’s red carpet appearances skyrocketed the sale of baggy cargo pants and halter tank tops. From Disney teens to Billboard top artists, everyone was about that OTT glam!
Capris, wide belts, scrunchies, big hoops, scarf tops and low-rise jeans were some of the fashion trends we thought we left in the ’00s. But a brigade of millennial and Gen-Z celebrities have not only revived these but have given them a much-needed cool girl upgrade.
Here’s the celebrity-approved comeback of five 2000s trends that we aren’t complaining about.
1 Scarf Top
While Beyoncé did make a strong case for the wrap-around scarf tops, the risqué silhouette lost momentum over time. After a decade and a half, it saw the light of day again when starlets like Janhvi Kapoor and Ananya Panday decided to take it out for a spin. Janhvi was spotted in a lime green scarf top, which she paired with matching trousers and neck beads, continuing the millennium theme.
2 Low Rise Cuts
It’s almost impossible to believe that there was a time when Blake lively made a to of fashion faux-pas, but it was the 2000s, and nobody came out scot-free, not even Sareena Van Der Woodsen. Low-rise cuts were all the rage back then. The teenage heartthrobs loved wearing their jeans low and their tans two tones darker. It’s safe to say that no one was missing the hip-bone-on-display trend until Bella Hadid decided it was back. The supermodel has been spotted on various occasions wearing low-cut jeans or trousers, which she clubs with cropped cardigans and shirts.
3 Barrette Hair Clips
Of course, barrette in the 2000s was worn with butterflies and some frosted eye makeup; it even had the Tyra Banks nod of approval. In 2021, the barrette is less sassy more classy. Influencers and models like Kendall Jenner wear the matte or pearl-encrusted versions that gained popularity because of their feminine-chic aesthetic.
4 Baggy Pants
Big bulky jeans with chunky pockets was a staple in the 2000s. Celebrities didn’t just reserve them for street style; they were proudly papped in them during award nights and other formal events. Cut to 2021, when Gen-Z decided to honour the baggy pants by dethroning the skinny jeans. By the looks of it, celebrities like Aditi Rao Hydari are in full approval of this change in denim power dynamic.
5 Mini Baguettes
Every ‘it’ party girl loved a mini baguette back then. Enough to keep a lip gloss and a credit card, the arm candy was the favourite shoulder accessory for a hot minute. In the 2010s, it was all about practical totes and elbow bags carried by the women on the go. Recently, the mini baguette saw a resurgence when even celebrities like Priyanka Chopra Jonas decides to pick the fun over functional when it came to bags.
