When you’ve got 15 minutes with a Victoria’s Secret Angel, you do what anyone would do: Get all her fitness secrets. Considering the models’ bodies have to be blown up on giant city billboards and walked down a runway as they’re watched by tens of millions of viewers, staying fit is practically a full-time gig. Lucky for us, Romee Strijd was down to share some of her tips while promoting the new fragrance she’s the face of, Bombshell Seduction.
“I love that it’s super floral, because I come from Holland and we know our flowers,” Strijd said of the eau de parfum to ELLE.com. “It reminds me of Amsterdam with those hints of tuberose and jasmine.”
Ahead, Strijd talks about how to get motivated in the gym, what (delicious) healthy snacks she relies on, and which VS Angel is the most hardcore workout buddy.
1. Be open minded about buzzy wellness trends.
I’ve tried the infrared sauna and I actually really like it. You have all these different colored lights and every color does something different. [I also use] the jade roller. I put it in my freezer, so it’s extra cold. And, I use it in the morning when I’m super tired. I feel like it takes the puffiness out of the eyes after flying or after a short night.
2. Keep up your fitness routine even when you’re on the road.
Lately, I’ve been working out in hotels, because I’ve been traveling a lot. It’s actually fun to sometimes be by yourself, put your headphones on, make a little workout schedule and just do it.
3. Hit the gym with your S.O. for extra motivation.
My boyfriend and I workout together. We never really do the same training, but we go to the gym together and then we say, “Okay, one hour from now we’re leaving.” So, it helps. We get competitive. We always do a planking challenge. I think it’s really motivating [to work out with your partner], because whenever I don’t feel like it, he’s like, “Oh, come on. Let’s do it! Let’s get it over with!”
4. Create a regular workout schedule.
I would say I workout four to five times a week. On my day off, I like to do it in the morning and take my shower and get ready for the day. When I’m working, I mostly go straight after work, before dinner.
5. You don’t need fancy equipment.
For abs, I like a little circuit on the mat. With every [exercise], you should always be using your abs—even when you do squats. Try to feel them [with every movement]. I’ve been doing everything myself with ankle weights and resistance bands, and I bring my jump rope when I travel. You can even do it in a hotel room if you have a mat.
6. Turn working out into a social event.
[The Angels and I] always try to work out together and then plan a nice brunch or lunch after. It’s really motivating. Jasmine [Tookes] is the most hardcore. She’s strong. She can do a lot of weights!
7. Ease into a fitness routine with short bursts of activity.
I’m not always motivated, but you just have to go do it because afterwards you feel so great and you enjoy the day more because you’ve done it. So, just start somewhere. Just do something. Say to yourself that you only have 15 minutes or something and then it comes from there.
8. Snacks are your best friend.
Because I travel so much and work out so much I have to make sure I eat enough. For me, it always helps to bring snacks on the way. So, I bring my favorite dark chocolate bar from Hu Kitchen. Then, I eat a lot of fruit and RX bars. Just make sure you have enough with you.
