Beauty mogul and almost-billionaire Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Travis Scott look every bit the power couple on the August cover of an international men’s magazine. While the photograph is glamourous and sexy, Jenner also makes a body positive statement with her appearance, not something you would expect from the hyper-curated and beauty-obsessed Kardashian-Jenner clan. A long scar on her left leg’s thigh is clearly visible. There’s no Photoshop or concealer at play.
This adds to the conversation around body positive imagery that is steadily going mainstream. In the recent past, a few Bollywood celebrities have admitted that while they may look picture perfect on social media, they too have struggled with image issues and insecurity. For instance, Sonakshi Sinha has felt (and resisted) the pressure of conforming to society’s standards of traditional Bollywood beauty, while keeping her health and mental wellbeing at the centre of the conversation. Even Sonam Kapoor likes to remind her fans that she doesn’t wake up looking like she’s ready to hit the Cannes red carpet.
Of late, a few celebrities have gone ahead and let their stretch marks and scars be seen in public. By displaying their ‘flaws’, they give women everywhere a nudge to embrace their bodies. Let’s not forget that when they make red carpet appearances or when you see them on screen, an army of make-up artists and stylists are responsible for the way they look.
