9 body positive stars who want you to love your beautiful imperfections
Bring on the real talk
Beauty mogul and almost-billionaire Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Travis Scott look every bit the power couple on the August cover of an international men’s magazine. While the photograph is glamourous and sexy, Jenner also makes a body positive statement with her appearance, not something you would expect from the hyper-curated and beauty-obsessed Kardashian-Jenner clan. A long scar on her left leg’s thigh is clearly visible. There’s no Photoshop or concealer at play.
This adds to the conversation around body positive imagery that is steadily going mainstream. In the recent past, a few Bollywood celebrities have admitted that while they may look picture perfect on social media, they too have struggled with image issues and insecurity. For instance, Sonakshi Sinha has felt (and resisted) the pressure of conforming to society’s standards of traditional Bollywood beauty, while keeping her health and mental wellbeing at the centre of the conversation. Even Sonam Kapoor likes to remind her fans that she doesn’t wake up looking like she’s ready to hit the Cannes red carpet.
Of late, a few celebrities have gone ahead and let their stretch marks and scars be seen in public. By displaying their ‘flaws’, they give women everywhere a nudge to embrace their bodies. Let’s not forget that when they make red carpet appearances or when you see them on screen, an army of make-up artists and stylists are responsible for the way they look.
9 body positive celebrities who flaunt their beautiful imperfections
Frankly, the model deserves a medal for the sheer number of times she's been refreshingly candid about everything from her body to being a mom. She's uploaded her post-delivery stretch marks and breastfeeding photos. She once tweeted a pic of skin-stretched dimples across her leg, with the caption: 'Whatevs'. Which is also what we want to say to all the body-shaming trolls out there.
The actor was a few kilos on the heavier side when she entered the industry in 2011. Today, she's dropped down by a few sizes but has stretch marks to document her body's transformation. In an Instagram photo, Chopra sported a mid-riff barring tee, and fans were quick to notice her stretch marks and laud her for keeping it natural.
Guess what, even Lady Gaga has stretch marks on her breasts, as is evident from an Instagram selfie she posted. Surely, this means the gods don't discriminate. Anyone can end up with stretch marks, so let's not make a big deal of it.
She once captioned an Instagram post: 'Hey stretch'. Leaving no room for doubt that the model and cookbook author is here to make you feel better about your body, by choosing to accept hers. Padma Lakshmi also isn't as self-conscious about the 7-inch scar on her right arm, as she used to be when she was younger.
The designer has emerged as a vocal supporter of body positivity and women's issues. Having suffered from severe acne growing up, she posted an Instagram image of her teenage days, and wrote: 'It's taken me a LOT to put up this picture... I’ve had terrible acne for 14yrs and by terrible I mean, most days it looked like I had a cigarette stubbed in my face. Dark scars in my face & in my head.' Everybody who can relate say, 'Aye'.
As an A-list movie star who's killing it all the way in Hollywood, Priyanka looks amazing every time you see her, whether it's on social media or paparazzi photos. But recently, by posting this Instagram image, she reminded us that even she has dental issues and can look less than flattering when she's in the dreaded dentist's chair.
When the singer was snapped by the paparazzi for the first time in a bikini since she underwent a kidney transplant, a surgical scar on her thigh was prominently visible. After such a close brush with death, we would imagine Selena is just too happy with the gift of life to bother with such things.
Earlier this year, bad gal Riri posted selfies of her sunbathing at the beach. She didn't shy away from revealing a stubble on her legs and what looked like stretch marks on her thighs. The singer then clarified: 'I got stretch marks but that's just the sun', which is also a huge deal considering most celebrities do not acknowledge the existence of such physical attributes.
The singer recently held a masterclass in #SelfLove on Instagram. With a series of photographs and boomerangs, she professed loud and clear that she loves herself, despite stretch marks, cellulite, "extra fat" and no thigh gap. Applause-worthy, honestly.
