The trailer for Sonam Kapoor and Anil Kapoor starrer Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (ELKDTAL) released on Dec 27. The film’s title is a nod to one of Anil Kapoor’s most iconic songs, from the movie 1942: A Love Story, and is enough to fill the average Bollywood fan’s heart with nostalgia. The film is also special because it marks the first time that the father-daughter duo share screen space. if you haven’t yet, watch the trailer here:

The full cast
Aside from Sonam Kapoor and Anil Kapoor, the movie stars Rajkummar Rao and Juhi Chawla in key roles. It also marks the Bollywood debut of South Indian actress Regina Cassandra.
The plot
The trailer opens with a young girl, Sweety, who dreams of finding her perfect match and getting married to him. All grown up, Sweety (Sonam Kapoor) finds herself smack in the middle of a match-making exercise, orchestrated by her family, with the pressure of having to choose a suitor. Narrated by Rajkumar Rao, a playwright smitten by Sweety, the love story seems simple enough till we learn that Sweety is harbouring a big secret. Without giving too much away, it hints at the fact that Sweety is, in fact, in love with a woman and that this reality might destroy her relationship with her father.
Why we’re talking about it
Representation of LGBTQ characters has been a slow trickle in Bollywood mainstream movies. The last significant homosexual character we saw was Fawad Khan in Kapoor & Sons (2016) and this might be a small but much-needed step in the right direction.
Also, if a movie trailer has you crushing on Anil Kapoor (and his salt-and-pepper beard) all over again, then that movie must be intensely discussed. We do not make these rules; it’s basic science.
