Shortly after news broke of Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux’s decision to separate after 7+ years together, fans were already tweeting about their new/old hope for a Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt wedding — since Brad Pitt is also single after he and Angelina Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016.

But a source made abundantly clear to People that a Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt wedding will never, ever happen in the starkest of terms. “They’ve been over each other for longer than they were ever together,” a source, with knowledge of Pitt and Aniston’s current relationship, said. And they’ve changed. “Now you add six kids on his side and each of them having their own assorted battle scars into the mix? Forget it. It’s not going to happen.” Like, don’t even, internet.
“They haven’t seen each other in ages,” the source noted. “For well over a decade now they have lived totally separate lives and so not surprisingly, they have become totally different people than who they once were when they were together.”
Yes, they are friendly, but no, they are not close. “They aren’t in regular contact, beyond an occasional text back and forth to wish each other the best when there’s been a new project or big event,” the source added.

And more importantly, they’ve learned from past mistakes. “They broke up, and they did it because they had serious issues,” the source said. “They’re not stupid. They remember why it didn’t work.”
Aniston and Pitt were married from 2000 to 2005. That marriage ended in part because Pitt was rumored to have left for Jolie, who he met and fell in love with on the set of their film Mr. and Mrs. Smith while he was still married to Aniston. “I would be a robot if I said I didn’t feel moments of anger, of hurt, of embarrassment,” Aniston said of seeing the photos of Pitt together with Jolie in her September 2005 first post-divorce interview with Vanity Fair.

Pitt and Jolie were ultimately together for 12 years, two married. For his part, Pitt has recently admitted to personal issues with alcohol and drug abuse. In May 2017 he told GQ Style, “I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff, or something,” he said. “I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know—things I wasn’t dealing with. I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem.”
One Twitter user put why an Aniston and Pitt reunion isn’t happening more succinctly:

In the years since their split, Aniston has made it clear she is sick of being part of the tabloids’ Team Jolie vs. Team Aniston narrative and attacked for her relationship status. “My marital status has been shamed; my divorce status was shamed; my lack of a mate had been shamed; my nipples have been shamed. It’s like, ‘Why are we only looking at women through this particular lens of picking us apart? Why are we listening to it?'” she told Marie Claire in its December 2016 issue. “I just thought: I have worked too hard in this life and this career to be whittled down to a sad, childless human.”
