Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla are the vanguard of Indian fashion, coming on 30 years in the industry. At this year’s BMW India Bridal Week, they’re presenting a collection inspired by the city of Benares. They told ELLE that, “Varanasi, its history, culture and tradition of craftsmanship, music and the arts have always influenced us deeply. We have eight distinctive ranges. It’s a smorgasbord of moods, and each range possesses a different one, a unique aspect of Varanasi’s character, and the emotions and impressions the city inspires within us.” Of course, chikankari work, the designers’ staple, will feature heavily: “Chikan is our heart and soul.”
The pair also have a new international label, Jani Khosla, but will always stay true to India’s rich design heritage. “Our design philosophy and sensibilities remain the same. They are a constant. India-inspired, multi-layered embroideries and intricate detailing to create couture that exudes classical elegance and will always remain current rather than trendy and transient.”
