From waves to poker straight hair: Here’s the secret to achieving Meghan Markle’s new look
The Duchess stepped away from her signature waves
Following in the footsteps of Kate Middleton’s iconic bouncy blow dry that became a British institution in its own right, the so-called Meghan Markle effect has gained the Duchess of Sussex’s glossy dark brown waves their own permanent place on our hair inspo boards.
Don’t even get us started on her signature messy bun.
So when Markle stepped out at Loughborough University for her most recent royal visit with poker straight hair, we were shook. Ok, it wasn’t that dramatic, but the 37-year-old’s new look was definitely food for thought.
Namely, how does she get her naturally curly hair that straight?
According to Meghan’s former hairstylist, Theonie Kakoulli at Nicky Clarke, the secret to the seriously sleek look is all in the salon treatments.
Kakoulli revealed all to PEOPLE, explaining that although the Duchess naturally has “beautiful curls”, she undergoes regular salon treatments to keep it in tip top condition.

“Meghan came to see me at least twice for keratin treatments,” Kakoulli told PEOPLE, adding, “It’s great for people with naturally curly hair like Meghan, it takes the frizz out and makes it more manageable — she said it made a real difference.”
So how does it work?
In-salon keratin treatments harness proteins (largely a huge dose of keratin, sometimes found inside shampoos and serums) as well as amino acids which disrupt the hair’s natural curl pattern, smoothing, reinforcing and straightening in the process.
Et voila! Super sleek hair worthy of a royal minus the damage. Put the hair straighteners down.
