It’s been a busy week for ace designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, dressing everyone from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Sonam Kapoor at the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. But the true highlight came in the form of the latest bride to have donned their label: Lalita Bain, an acid attack survivor who just tied the knot.
The 23-year-old was attacked by a relative over a petty fight, and has since undergone 17 facial surgeries. Acid attack survivor organisation, Saahas Foundation, soon took her under their wing and word of her wedding reached the designers through Lubna Adams, a noted fashion choreographer. “The day we found out what she’s been through, we promised ourselves that we would give Lalita the wedding of her dreams. She came to our studio and the entire team fell in love with her,” recalls Sandeep.
The duo then set to work on delivering on their promise, taking care of everything from the trousseau to the pandit for the wedding ceremony. “Lalita has been through a few corrective surgeries, but still has a long way to go. Her earlobes were destroyed in the attack, so she couldn’t even wear earrings. We gave her a necklace and a maang tikka instead, and she was so thrilled,” he smiles.
