3 airport looks you should totally avoid if you want to sail past security

When you’re getting up for a ridiculously early flight, the last thing you want to worry about is whether your airport looks are on point. All anyone (well, us non-celebrities) wants is to be comfy and warm enough on the plane, right? Well, according to one expert, we should all think a little bit more about the clothes we put on for flights. In fact, there are some outfit choices that always cause issues when you’re going through security, former Transportation Security Agent Kimberly Pruitt told Who What Wear.

Pruitt worked at Los Angeles International Airport for five years, so she knows her stuff. And, while you’ll probably be able to guess some of the no-nos (think metal jewellery), others are a little more surprising.

3 things to leave out of your airport looks:

1. Maxi skirts and dresses

“If you are opposed to getting patted down, then wearing a maxi skirt or dress isn’t your best bet because the officer will have to check you are not hiding anything under your skirt,” says Pruitt.

never wear to the airport

2. Lots of hair pins

“Believe it or not, too many bobby pins [kirby grips] will set off the metal detector alarm. If you’re looking to maintain your hair and skip the pat down, then I would suggest getting dolled up after screening,” she adds.

3. Cargo pants and shorts

“Cargo pants and shorts are one of the most difficult items of clothing at the airport,” says Pruitt. “All the different pockets become a major hassle because they almost always set off the alarm. When being told by an officer to remove everything from your pockets, there is always a lighter or set of keys that you’ve forgotten in a hidden pocket.”

So, if you want to get through airport security as swiftly and smoothly on your next flight, then maybe keep this in mind.
