The Shloka Mehta – Akash Ambani engagement culminated in a low-key house party last night, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was not throwing down with the dress code. Okay fair, the house was a 27-storey skyscraper-for-four called Antilia, but it was a Monday night and the theme was clearly formal-chill.
Akash wore a three-piece suit, no tie. While Shloka chose a low-shine metallic gown with what appears to be her ghar-ka-diamonds. It was simple, elegant and looked like a prom photo, taken by the paparazzi.
So, even if your prom is lit enough to be hosted at one of the most exclusive addresses in the world, it’s clear that Aishwarya Rai is the over-dressed chaperone, who had this gown just ‘lying around’.
What is that bold red lip compensating for? The lack of red carpet? That was a hint. To be fair, we think there was a moment when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan decided she was Over The Top.
This moment, to be precise:
Katrina showed up in various shades of nude, with what appears to be a post-gym glow.
Kiran Rao dressed like she was going for an invite-only book reading in an underground art gallery.
John Abraham came as a lumberjack, like someone was expecting him to fell Antilia after dinner.
But the moment when we realized beyond a sliver of a doubt that Aishwarya was the most extra was when Natasha Poonawalla showed up in what can only be considered casual for a woman whose hats need a building permit.
Seriously, here’s what the entrepreneur looks like when it’s not a Monday night house-party/prom:
And here’s a hat she actually owns and has actually worn:
And here’s that hat next to Antilia, for scale:
Side note: Rumour has it that the same architect will be working on Akash and Shloka’s future home. The architect of the hat, that is.
Everyone knows you have to call Karan Johar and find out what he’s wearing before a party, then plan your life around that. Or maybe, Aish did and Karan was like “oh nothing, just a blazer”. And while Ash was expecting this:
Or this:
He surprised us all and showed up in this:
That’s just a hint of snake…on the blazer. Not Johar.
It was a sombre affair. No, not ombre.
Save it for Cannes.
