Don’t let his lacklustre bearing fool you, King Krule is a young musician with a powerful voice. But that’s not the only reason we’re digging him.
He’s just 19.
He evaded school so much that Social Services threatened to put his parents behind bars. But music was his salve. His work is a mix of jazz and dubstep with a hip-hop growl. By 19, he has shed three stage names – Zoo Kid, DJ JD Sports, and Edgar The Beatmaker – to settle on King Krule.
He’s from the fame academy.
He’s a graduate of the BRIT School of Performance Arts and Technology, a South-east London state school famous for turning out talents like Adele and Amy Winehouse.
He’s an old soul.
Don’t let his face fool you. His gravelly voice is more old school than high school. Catch his latest video for ‘A Lizard State’, which opens with Alfred Hitchcock defying gravity, as you do.
