Anil Kapoor reveals how he fell in love with wife Sunita and it’s basically a Bollywood movie

Find yourself a man who talks about you the way actor Anil Kapoor does about his wife Sunita. The couple married in 1984 and is famously media-shy. But Humans of Bombay, a social media account which features street photographs and interviews, just gave us the low down on Anil and Sunita’s love story and we’re hooked.

It all started with a prank call  which is not what we can say for too many couples. Anil’s friend gave Sunita his number to prank call Anil (maybe he was subtly playing matchmaker). We don’t know how the conversation went down but it was enough for Anil to fall for Sunita’s voice.

They met soon after at a party and became friends. In fact, Anil was even interested in another woman at the time but she vanished from his life, leaving him heartbroken. It was at this stage that their bond grew stronger and soon after, started dating. Sunita was a successful model while Anil was struggling to make a mark in Bollywood. Sunita also belonged to a rich, liberal family and Anil knew he would have to prove himself worthy before asking for her hand in marriage.

“A friend of mine gave Sunita my number to prank call me––that’s when I first spoke to her & fell in love with her voice! Soon after, we met at a party––there was just something about her. We started talking & became friends. We used to discuss this other girl I liked – you know, if I like her or she likes me? Then suddenly that girl vanished, leaving me heartbroken – our friendship strengthened because of that! Little did I know that Sunita was the one all along – we started dating organically. It’s not like in the movies––I didn’t ask her to be my girlfriend––we both just knew. She was from a liberal family––a banker’s daughter with a modelling career & I was bekaar! She didn’t care who I was or what my profession is – none of it mattered! I lived in Chembur & she lived on Nepeansea road – it took me an hour to reach by bus. She would start screaming, ‘No come fast by cab!’ & I’d say ‘Arrey I don’t have money’ then she’d say ‘Just come na’ & pay for my cab! We dated for 10 years––we travelled and grew together. She was always clear that she won’t enter the kitchen. If I said ‘cook’ I’d get a kick! I knew I needed to become something before asking her to marry me. I went through the struggle of not getting work, but she supported me unconditionally. So when I got my first break, ‘Meri Jung’ I thought, now house will come, kitchen will come, help will come…I can get married! So I called Sunita & said, ‘Let’s get married tomorrow – it’s tomorrow or never’ & the next day, we were married! I went for shoot 3 days later & madam went abroad on our honeymoon…without me! Honestly, she knows me better than I know me. We’ve built our life; our home together. We’ve raised 3 kids & been through ups and downs. But I feel like we’re finally dating now – romantic walks & dinners have just begun! We’ve been together 45 years––45 years of friendship, love & companionship. They don’t make people like her anymore. She’s the perfect mother, perfect wife & the reason I wake up every morning, motivated. You know why? When I ask her, ‘Arrey, yesterday only I gave you so much money’ she says, ‘Woh sab khatam ho gaya…it’s all finished!’ and I jump out of bed & run to work!”

When he got his first break with Meri Jung, he asked Sunita to marry him and they tied the knot the very next day. Three days later, when Anil was shooting, he laughs that she went abroad on their honeymoon without him. It seems like this sense of humour that they share has kept them going. “In a marriage, a sense of humour is very important. Being able to laugh at each other and ourselves and being positive helps,” Anil had once said in an interview. He added, “According to my friends — Javed Akhtar and Anupam Kher, I am what I am because of my wife. They joke sometimes, that “Sunita nahi hoti toh Anil raste pe hota.”

The couple has three children  Sonam, Rhea and Harshvardhan. At 61, Anil is fitter and more energetic than most 25-year-olds we know, and now we know why. In the Humans of Bombay post, Anil credits Sunita as his biggest motivation to get up everyday and head to work. His film, Fanney Khan, is about to release soon and he was recently seen in Race 3, which was, let’s just say, not his best film. In an interview, he admitted that he did it for the money: “Whenever I sign a film, I obviously think of the amount of money that it will fetch me. If I do not give importance to earning enough money, how will I run my kitchen? My wife will never allow me into the house if I do not earn money.”

We guess Sunita will never have to worry about that happening.
