Baba Sehgal was Indian rap before Yo Yo Honey Singh made it non-consensual. Baba’s rap was for the whole family, especially if the family’s been passing the joint. And while it doesn’t have the earworm quality of his earlier Going To The Gym? (Then go to the gym!), ‘Chicken Fried Rice’ is another sign that Baba Sehgal has come back to us. He’s been around, in the Bigg Boss house, singing for Telugu movies and charming a new generation with his terrible puns and rhymes on Twitter. (Baba was Twitter-ready before any of us got on the internet.) But it’s nice to have him do what he does best, ie set the kind of jokes your uncle sends you on Whatsapp to tune. Anyone who grew up in the ‘90s is already familiar with his terrific PJs. He even had a song called PJ, come to think of it. The magic of a truly bad PJ is that you laugh before good taste kicks in. Baba Sehgal is the undisputed king of this genre. In the era of carefully constructed cool personas online, Baba encourages you to release your inner uncle.
(Just one word for all the ‘90s peeps: Manjulamanjulamanjulamanjula)
