The beauty products you need to stay cool while on the move this summer
Recommended by ELLE India's beauty and health director
My daily commute averages at three hours, and I think of myself as an expert at maximising time spent in the back seat of a taxi (watch out for my TED talk). It’s a well-calculated routine that includes snacking, Netflix-ing, and doing most of my make-up on the go. But when rush hour is as stress inducing as Mercury retrograde, I’ve learnt to be prepared for every situation. Will I be doing my make-up in the back of a smelly cab? Will my frizz reach new vertical heights because I air-dried my hair during a rickshaw ride? Or will I end up taking a train for a meeting across town and risk a complete make-up meltdown? Tried it once, never again.
Here are products that will help keep your cool even when it’s 40ºC outside
Forest Essentials Facial Tonic Mist Vetiver Water, INR 975 A FAN AND FACE MIST: Davines Oi Oil Hair Serum, INR 3,250 Nudestix Magnetic Matte Eye Color in Chocolate, INR 2,350
When the air conditioning in your Uber breaks down at the peak of summer, a cooling vetiver face mist and a collapsible hand fan will feel just as gratifying as physically sticking your head in a refrigerator.
No matter how long the red light, the risk of your eyeliner going wonky in a moving vehicle is always high. Creamy eyeshadow sticks have been a revelation in these situations. Wear them along your lash line or in a C-shape along the crease line and smudge it with your fingers—there’s no time for brushes or precision. The Fenty Beauty Match Stix is a super versatile eyeshadow, blush and highlighter, all rolled into one. Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Concealer comes with a primer making is easy to apply and carry.
Estée Lauder Double Wear Instant Fix Concealer, INR 2,500
You step out with wet hair but it doesn’t quite dry right. And if you’re lucky to live in Mumbai, the humidity will make sure your hair is either frizzy or so flat that it needs another wash. What do I do? I part my hair in the centre, take small sections from the front and twist them along the crown. Then, I gather this in the back into a low knot. Hair is off my face and my neck feels cooler.
A BRIGHT LIPSTICK AND FAIL-SAFE MASCARA:
They’re basically like caffeine for the face. And a good setting spray makes sure everything stays in place. So even when sweat begins to trickle down my back (at which point all decorum is lost), I still feel put together–neck up, at least.
It’s easy to over pack, but being in the beauty game long enough (and a constant shoulder ache from carrying a bag that’s too heavy), I’ve found that intelligent, multipurpose products are just as good as the other 2,679 essentials at home. If you still feel the need to carry everything along, look out for mini versions. Portable make-up is your ally whether you’re doing your whole face or need some retouching once you’ve reached your destination.
