Hair expert Adhuna Bhabani on her milestone moments and favourite styling tips

In Bollywood, the ’90s and early noughties were all about sleek, poker straight hair. But the debut of Preity Zinta’s wavy locks in the 2001 blockbuster Dil Chahta Hai paved the way for beauty experiments on the silver screen—a change sparked by hairstylist Adhuna Bhabani. Since then, Bhabani has been setting hair trends through her work with celebrities like Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan. As the founder and director of BBlunt, the iconic salon chain and hair brand, she’s also making these cool styles easily accessible to us lesser mortals. Here, the country’s most sought-after hair expert tells us about her journey and her favourite styling tips.

GETTING STARTED

“I put in months of training through various apprenticeships, and even went to night school on the journey to getting my hairdressing qualification. In 1994, I came to Mumbai on a short holiday and ended up getting into freelance work here. Soon, my brother Osh (Ashoke) Bhabani came here too, and we started our first salon, Juice, in 1998.”

MILESTONE MOMENTS…

“Partnering with GCPL (Godrej Consumer Products Limited) in 2004 and creating my own line of products. Working on Dil Chahta Hai was also an opportunity of a lifetime; it was a modern film with a great team that gave us the freedom to create trendsetting looks.”

THE MOST COMMON HAIRCARE MISTAKE…

“Most people associate a haircut with change, but it’s an essential ritual you must follow to maintain the look and shape of your hair. It has a natural cycle of growing, resting and falling every seven years, and regular haircuts prevent split ends from reaching the roots and obstructing this cycle.”

MY GO-TO PRODUCTS…

“Our Climate Control Leave-in Cream is the best all-rounder that maintains a light hold over unruliness. For the girl on the go, I love the new Repair Remedy range and the Back To Life Dry Shampoo that can reduce greasiness, and boost volume and texture.”

THE COOLEST HAIR TRENDS TO TRY THIS SEASON

“Opt for a natural, dishevelled look that has soft movement and texture”

COLOUR:

“Skip gold and blonde and make way for pastel hues”

STYLE :

“Try the ’80s-style David Bowie mullet, but with a soft, avant-garde twist”
