Our country might be in the throes of underlying political unrest and the climate change may be worsening at an alarming rate, but one constant in this ever changing world is our fascination for everything celebrity. Every award ceremony that rolled out a red carpet fed our pressing need to take the ‘who wore it better’ quiz.
Bollywood celebrities on the red carpet didn’t disappoint this year. We had stunning gowns, beautifully structured ensembles and beauty looks that we could hardly wait to try. There were some misses, but even Aishwarya Rai’s purple reign of terror could not overshadow the picture she made in that Elie Saab gown.
Bollywood’s red carpet winners
Sonam Kapoor gave us hilarious memes, but she also gave us several memorable looks from Ralph & Russo at Cannes (those jhumkas paired with the gown: genius). Priyanka Chopra kept her winning streak by going off shore, putting herself firmly on every international best dressed list with her Zuhair Murad gown at the Oscars red carpet and twirling her way into the hearts of American fashion critics in her Jason Wu number at the Emmys.
Deepika Padukone caused a stir back home with her Monisha Jaising outfit at the MTV EMAs. It got mixed reviews with one camp baying for the stylist’s blood and the other hailing Deepika’s choice as one of her boldest so far. The Bajirao Mastani actress again faced Twitter criticism when she stepped out in a custom Gauri and Nainika number for the Star Screen Awards, with a giant rose perched on her shoulder.
This year, many celebrities took detours from the traditional red carpet mandate in favour of separates like Anushka Sharma in Gaurav Gupta at the Stardust awards. Alia Bhatt took inspiration from Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland at the Emmys and wore an asymmetric peplum top with leggings. Katrina Kaif stuck to what she knows works for her and gave us a winner in her emerald Ziad Nakad gown at the Golden Rose awards.
If there was one celebrity we could not fault, it had to be Kareena Kapoor Khan. Whether it was her radiant self (baby bump included) in a red Gauri and Nainika gown or the Monisha Jaising gown she wore earlier this year, Mama Kareena did no wrong.
