Founded in 1774, Birkenstock has earned the status of a cult footwear brand globally. It is driven by the notion of quality and functionality across all its sections. For its latest collaboration, it has teamed up with Toogood, a London-based design studio launched in 2008 by Faye Toogood.
Faye’s expansive work range includes interior design, homeware, fine art and fashion. Without being constrained under one designation, she continues to defy the boxes and labels made for creative individuals. Her studio allows people to cross-pollinate across genres – architects, sculptors, furniture makers and illustrators collaborate on projects without boundaries.

“Birkenstock and Toogood is a combination of genuine craftsmanship and uncompromising quality. The unique take and talent of Faye Toogood will create a whole new version of our iconic designs. We look forward to seeing what is the next level of functional design,” shared Oliver Reichert, Birkenstock CEO.
“To collaborate with such an iconic brand as Birkenstock has been an incredibly rewarding experience and one that marks an important moment in Toogood’s growth. For me, Birkenstock represents comfort and timeless, recognisable, sculptural form – all qualities I admire and strive for. Talking with Mr Reichert, I found we shared so many values, from high-quality materials to manufacture. The opportunity to extend our partnership beyond shoes to clothing and a bed brought a truly holistic approach to the design of the collections, reflecting the way I think and work – without boundaries,” shared artist Faye Toogood.

The collection comes with three sandal styles for men and women – the Forager, the Mudlark and the Beachcomber – inspired by objet trouvés (object found by an artist and displayed with no, or minimal, alteration as a work of art), Along with the series of footwear designs, there is an additional capsule line of formal wear and accessories, influenced by sculptural forms and fluid silhouettes. The palette ranges from black and white to grey, with a pop of summery yellow in the shoes.

The iconic Birkenstock style has been given a revamp through a cut and overlap redesign, which is the stand out element of this collection. You will also find an infusion of bold patterns, textures and prints in these new sandals. Taking the collaboration a notch further, the brand and the design house have also come up with a new bed. They’ve combined Birkenstock’s aesthetic and Toogood’s distinctive design approach, taking a cue from the original footbed shoe design.
The cosy bed design follows the same health-first principle for lying and sleeping as the label applies for walking and standing. Fluffy layers of canvas and leather upholstery make a soft form, which sits firmly on the base. The headboard and top surround are upholstered in cream leather, retaining its natural texture.
The new footwear line will drop in India today exclusively on www.birkenstock.com/1774.
