5 celebrity fitness trainers who train everyone from Katrina Kaif to Deepika Padukone
See who your favourites turn to to stay in shape
You may be able to hit snooze on your gym appointment, but it’s near impossible to scroll down your Instagram feed without getting an eyeful of Malaika Arora Khan acing a new Pilates move, even as Jacqueline Fernandez demonstrates aerial yoga with all the dexterity of a weightless fluffy bunny.
But credit where credit’s due: These ladies owe their success in the gym to their tireless fitness trainers, who effortlessly work around packed schedules and monotonous routines. So if you’ve been looking to score Katrina Kaif’s abs or Deepika Padukone’s toned legs, these are the names you should be following on Instagram.
After venturing into the fitness industry over two decades ago, Yasmin Karachiwala now trains the likes of Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone. Karichiwala’s area of expertise is Pilates which focuses on strengthening core muscles while increasing flexibility and endurance (she was the first BASI-certified pilates trainer in India). She also incorporates high altitude training, cardio and weights to create different routines to break the monotony. Keep up with her Instagram for quick workout videos that are all the fitspo you need!

Panday, a fitness and lifestyle expert, has a client list that includes Bipasha Basu and Lara Dutta. She was one of the first trainers to bring anti-gravity yoga to Mumbai. The exercise entails being suspended from the ceiling on a hammock-like device that allows for easier movements and increases blood circulation (don’t try this at home!). Ideal for when cardio just doesn’t cut it.
Besides being the official trainer for the Femina Miss India International pageants, Purohit now trains the likes of Jacqueline Fernandez, Malaika Arora Khan and Shraddha Kapoor. She is the co-founder of the Pilates and Altitude Training Studio in Mumbai and also the youngest stott pilates trainer (at the age of 16) in the world! Sign up for a session of altitude training with her – it’s conducted in a room that uses hypoxic machines to filter out oxygen, making your body work harder and burn more calories.
Gidwani is the go-to yogi for some of the biggest names in Bollywood (she often does couple classes with Kareena and Saif Ali Khan). She incorporates different forms of the exercise including Bikram yoga and power yoga into routines depending on what works best for each person. Peek into her recommended asanas in her book, Body Goddess The Complete Guide On Yoga For Women.
Karle is both a trainer and a nutritionist for Sonam Kapoor. The actresses workouts include weight training, interval training, cardio and pilates (you can find a quick workout from Karle on Kapoor’s app here). The pilates expert also travels with Kapoor to ensure that her workout plans and dietary intake are consistent. Head to her studio, Balanced Body, in Vile Parle for a consultation.
Bollywood fitness camps
Are you a yoga bunny like Kareena Kapoor Khan or a Pilates fiend like Jacqueline Fernandez?
The aerial yoga gang
Because just doing impossible stretches and asanas on a grounded yoga mat is oh-so-mainstream. Bollywood besties Jacqueline Fernandez and Sonam Kapoor have both taken to anti-gravity yoga to work on their flexibility, sweat off those extra calories and possibly jack up their Instagram cred too. We mean, just look at Jacqueline's mean split.
The ballet batch
Looking for something a little more fun than just a sweat sesh on the treadmill? Spin some fun back into your gym date with ballet. Alia Bhatt mixes up her workout routine with regular twirls at a ballet studio to work on her mobility and flexibility, while Nimrat Kaur signed up for Cindy Jourdain's boot camp to regain her agility for performing stunts for her movies.
The Zumba club
For those days when you just can't bring yourself to head to the gym, pop in some Zumba DVDs and let your body do the rest. And that's the true story behind how Nargis Fakhri got herself bikini-ready in two weeks for an urgent photoshoot. Neha Dhupia, another long-time advocate of the fitness form, prescribes it as the best way to beat gym ennui.
The Pilates pack
Founded by Joseph Pilates, this fitness form originally started out as a rehab practice for wounded soldiers in World War I. Deepika Padukone’s svelte bone structure means that she was born to be a card-carrying member of the Pilates club. Katrina Kaif, on the other hand, isn’t a naturally flexible person and puts some serious sweat into those pull-ups. Huma Qureshi discovered her passion for it when she realised how good it made her feel along with how great it made her look.
The yoga troops
From flab to fab, calculating the number of fitness success stories in Bollywood that owe their credit to yoga requires a calculator and a proficiency in advanced mathematics. Sure, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston are headlining the yoga gang abroad, but they were beaten to the punch by Kareena Kapoor Khan, Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Sonakshi Sinha among (many, many) others in India.
After delivering her gorgeous son Taimur, it was business as usual for Kareena who headed for her yoga session shortly after getting back on her feet. Her preferred form? Bikram yoga in a room with 40% humidity.
