Kareena, Katrina, Priyanka and other stars reveal their favourite cheat foods
It's not all kale and unhappiness for these ladies
You can write sonnets in praise of kale chips and quinoa salads but it doesn’t hide the fact that if given the option of chocolate that won’t go straight to your hips, you’d run from them faster than Severus Snape confronted with shampoo. When it comes to Bollywood celebrities, it’s pretty much the same.
Because of their meticulously crafted good looks, we tend to forget that celebrities are humans too. Humans that self-admittedly succumb to the glory of golden fried potato chips every once in a while.
The key to indulging in your favourite food and still look like you have an invisible team of Photoshop artists retouching each and every flaw? Balance. Deepika Padukone, for example, has a weakness for sugar, something she’s translated into a baking hobby. “I’m more of a baker. I’m very confident when it comes to desserts. My sister and I make a good team because she handles the main course and I take care of dessert. I can do cakes, cookies, brownies, nankhatai, all of it.”
We’ve rounded up some of the Bollywood’s fittest celebrities and their food indulgences, so you don’t feel bad the next time you find yourself justifying the pizza you substituted for grilled chicken.
Kareena, Deepika and other stars reveal their favourite cheat foods
Deepika once revealed that she couldn’t do without a traditional south Indian breakfast despite her strict diet and, well, chocolates and desserts. She told us that while she had to learn how to cook when she moved to Mumbai, it’s baking that she excels at. “I’m more of a baker, actually. I’m very confident when it comes to desserts. My sister and I make a good team because she handles the main course and I take care of dessert. I can do cakes, cookies, brownies, nankhatai, all of it,” she said. This does explain her pre-Cannes diet of chocolate pastry and coffee that had us stumped.
Priyanka Chopra confessed in a recent interview that while she takes care of what she eats, she doesn’t have to work hard to stay fit because of her great metabolism. “When I start getting fat, I'll work on it. I like food, and I don't like the gym, and as long as I look like this without doing anything, why bother?" This is not really surprising, considering her pre-red carpet prep involves eating a burger for dinner. In an interview, she revealed that she needs to eat a burger to ease the stress (been there) and while she has managed to stay away from parathas slathered with white butter (her favourite food) to maintain her body, she gives in to desserts every single time. “Give me anything: red velvet Cake, hot chocolate fudge, jalebis, cakes…”
If there’s one thing we have learnt to expect from Katrina Kaif, it’s unpredictability. If you, like the rest of the world, saw her abs in Baar Baar Dekho and heard Parineeti Chopra’s testimony on Koffee With Karan about Katrina’s love for working out, you'd be forgiven for thinking she lives on a diet of green tea and unicorn tears. But it turns out that the actress has a sweet tooth, after all. When asked if she could eat one thing all day, every day, she said, “Anything sweet! I’m a big foodie. If I had to choose one thing, I would have pancakes for breakfast, pancakes for lunch, pancakes for dinner, pancakes for snacks.” There you go.
“It has to be Maharashtran-style rava-fried fish,” the Half Girlfriend actress answered, when asked about her one true food indulgence. Shraddha, who is one of the fittest celebrities in Bollywood right now, also indulges in Mumbai street food now and then, with vada pav being her favourite.
It’s no secret that eating healthy and finding foods that suit your constitution are on top of Kareena Kapoor’s rule book. But that book is promptly thrown out of the window when she is on a vacation. “On holidays, the first thing I do is get pizza and french fries,” she told us, but added that she still practices portion control while bingeing on junk food.
Jacqueline Fernandez’s cheat food comes with a disclaimer, “It's still kind of healthy, I'm afraid,” she admitted sheepishly before telling us her one indulgence. “It'd probably be sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten-free chocolate cake. [laughs] I was serving that to some guests at home once, and they were like, "What the hell is it? Does it have anything remaining in it?"
Sonam Kapoor has often complained about being the ‘unfit’ one in her family. At a book launch, she revealed that she had to consciously stay away from anything unhealthy (and, no doubt, delicious) because it would go straight to her hips. While she adheres to her nutritionist-prescribed diet six days a week, Sunday is her cheat day, where she indulges in everything from dosas, to samosas and rich walnut cakes. Sonam even titled herself an ‘Indian junk food addict who pretends to love Japanese food.”
