All the Bollywood movies we’re excited for in 2019

So. Many. Epic. Dramas.

BY Salva Mubarak | January 11th, 2019

Every January I promise myself that THIS is going to be the year I keep all my resolutions. While I’ve already given up on the 6-days-a week Zumba classes, I’m not going to give up on my only other resolution for 2019, which is to stay optimistic. Halfway there, right?

If you, like me, are a Bollywood fan, then you know how hard sticking to this resolution can be, even in a year like 2018 that saw some amazing films but also dashed hopes with movies like Zero. But it’s a new year, and I solemnly swear that I will let a renewed sense of optimism fill my Bollywood-loving heart; here’s everything we’re excited to watch this year:

Mental Hai Kya (29 March 2019)

The only thing we know about this movie so far is that it stars Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao, and it’s supposed to be a ‘dark comedy-thriller’. The movie is written by Kanika Dhillon and is directed by Telugu director Prakash Kovelamudi.

Why we’re excited

Screenwriter Kanika Dhillon has given us Manmarziyan, a movie that forced us to acknowledge that we're in love with Vicky Kaushalgreen mohawk or not. The quirky posters of the movie, featuring the two main leads, have created a lot of interest. One depicts Kangana sitting in a bathtub with a plugged-in toaster sitting precariously on the edge, and one shows Rajkummar Rao with a large meat cleaver in his hand on top of a bleeding apple. Creepy? Yes. Intriguing? Also, yes.

Kalank (19 April 2019)

The period drama stars Madhuri dixit, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapoor, and Sonakshi Sinha.

Why we’re excited

Despite that fact that next-to-nothing is known about this film, it’s star-studded cast (and their regular Instagram Live updates from the shoot) has ensured that it's already making waves. Apparently, Kalank has also been many years in the making—this is allegedly Karan Johar’s late father and filmmaker, Yash Johar’s dream project.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (25 January 2019)

This movie is based on the life of Rani Laxmi Bai, the first woman in history to fight against British occupation in India. The trailer of the movie promises an epic, gore-filled, war drama where Kangana Ranaut gets to scream and behead men while delivering dialogues that would make Akshay Kumar weep with patriotic joy.

Why we’re excited

Rani Laxmibai is a role model for women across the world; the 22-year-old queen rallied forces and challenged oppressive British rule. Despite all the controversies surrounding the making of the movie, we really hope this turns out well so that we can have a kickass warrior queen to look up to on-screen this year.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (1 February 2019)

Touted 'the most unexpected romance of the year', Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Asia Laga stars Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Juhi Chawla in key roles. The movie is directed by debutant Shelly Chopra Dhar, and written by Gazal Dhaliwala, who has also written dialogues for movies like Lipstick Under My Burkha and Wazir.

Why we’re excited

There’s a lot to be excited about with ELKDTAL. Not only is it directed by a woman, it’s also written by a queer writer. Screenwriter Gazal Dhaliwala is a trans woman and has, reportedly, used her own life experiences to give shape to this story.

Brahmastra (15 August 2019)

Written and Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the movie is an epic fantasy drama. It stars Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Nagarjuna.

Why we’re excited

Whether this movie will be India’s answer to Lord of the Rings or not, Brahmastra has already become one of the most anticipated movies of the year. It has a powerful cast, and it’s written and directed by Ayan Mukerji, who has proven his directorial chops with hits like Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. If you’re a RALIA shipper (that’s Ranbir and Alia for those who were born on the other side of the 2000s), this should be especially important as Ranbir and Alia reportedly began dating while shooting for this film.

Gully Boy (14 February 2019)

Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy has already created a lot of excitement with its power-packed trailer (and a trailer to the trailer). The movie is inspired by the life of rappers Divine and Naez,  and tells the story of a young boy from Mumbai’s slums who aspires to be a rap artist, including the struggles he overcomes to achieve this dream. It stars Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh and Kalki Koechlin in key roles.

Why we’re excited

Another movie helmed by a woman, this movie comes with the promise of Zoya Akhtar’s past nuanced works. Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, both formidable performers, are coming together for the first time in a movie with Gully Boy. It may also herald a new dawn for India's underground rap scene.
