Catwoman comes out as bisexual
In the latest issue of the comic, the superhero confirms long-held rumours: this cat swings both ways
Almost as good as Catwoman’s coming-out is the blogpost by her writer Genevieve Valentine explaining the development. Our favourite part: “While I don’t want to spoil what can’t yet be spoiled, please be assured that Selina’s longstanding connection to Batman has not been forgotten; that is not how bisexuality (or humanity) works.”
In the latest issue of the comic, Catwoman #39, released last week, the protagonist Selina Kyle is caught in a mob war and Eiko Hasigway, who has temporarily taken on the persona of Catwoman and is part of the mafia family hunting Selina, begs her to be careful. In response, Selina pulls her close and kisses her. After, Eiko asks Selina if the kiss was for the suit or for her. Selina doesn’t know, but ‘If we survive this, might be nice to find out.’ This promises to be the beginning of a real relationship rather than a sensational plot point. Yay for nuanced representations of queer identity!
Catwoman won’t be the only one marching in Gotham’s pride parade. There’s also Kate Kane or Batwoman, who came out as lesbian in 2006, and supervillian Catman, who was revealed to be bisexual in 2011. Actually there’s a whole lotta gay in the worlds of Marvel and DC. Geek out here and here.
