Deepika Padukone has, arguably, one of the best shoe closets in the movie business. You know she’s got red-heeled Louboutins for every day of the week, followed by her trusty Giuseppe Zanottis that follow her around the world on promotional tours. But her past two appearances have us convinced that the star is trading in her high heels and white sneakers for a surprise new choice: Pool slides or sliders.
Less than 48 hours ago, the star was spotted arriving at the Mumbai airport in a pair of bell-bottom jeans, which she paired with Nike slides. And just last night she was caught trading in the Nikes for a pair of blue Fenty X Puma slides, which everyone in the fashion world is currently obsessed with (because, Rihanna).
Now your boyfriend might spot these and ask, “bathroom chappals?”, which provides the perfect opportunity for a little fashion education. Slides have risen in status from the normcore movement to be embraced wholeheartedly by the top bosses on international runways. Remember Celine’s $773 furry slides that sparked a minor uproar on the internet? The Daily Mail went so far as to call them “the world’s ugliest shoes”.
Gucci also got in on the slide game, quickly offering up their $251 monogrammed versions. Soon, brands like Simone Rocha, Lanvin, No 21 and Joshua Sanders were offering you more than a few luxury versions of the frat boy footwear.
While the next generation of movie stars from Sarah Ali Khan (remember these traffic-stopping beauties) to Jhanvi Kapoor seem determined to make the most of the cool weather by bringing out their boots, Deepika is still batting for comfort first.
