Diets are never easy. Trying not to binge on potato chips at 4.00pm on a diet: near impossible. We feel your pain. Which is why we rounded up a nice little list of easy to make, easy to carry sweet and savoury snacks to help you get past those cravings, when you’re trying to eat healthy.

Sweet bites
Unhand that candy! Try these instead.

  • Crunchy apple and pear slices topped with cashew nuts, almonds or peanut butter will satisfy that sweet craving without derailing your diet. You can even make your own nut butter; inspiration, here and here. Vegan, gluten-free and Paleo (avoid peanut butter if on the primal diet)

  • Baked apple chips are great to munch on if you’re set on eating clean; it’s got nothing but the actual fruit in it. If you want, you could sprinkle on some cinnamon or other spices to kick the flavour up a notch. Vegan, gluten-free and Paleo

  • These chewy granola bars are the best (read: most delicious) substitute to an actual breakfast that you’re ever going to have. Gluten-free; make them vegan by replacing butter with coconut oil and honey with maple syrup

Savouries
Who said salads are boring? These fresh finds make great small meals, and are bursting with flavour.

  • Juicy, sweet, tart, fresh — and ridiculously easy to put together — this herby sweet corn ceviche is the perfect evening snack. Vegan and gluten-free

  • Nicoise salad is a meal in itself. With good fat from tuna and a healthy dose of nutrients and antioxidants from colourful veggies and eggs, it’s a great, simple recipe to throw into your diet mix. Gluten-free and Paleo

  • This hearty lentil salad is perfect to keep you satisfied between meals or even as a side, and packs in a lot of protein for peeps on a vegan diet; just swap the feta for avocado to make it dairy-free. Vegan and gluten-free
