Disney’s new show to feature an all-brown cast, including Freida Pinto and Jameela Jamil

For everyone who has been waiting for Crazy Rich Asians to happen for South Asians, get ready for a treat. Disney Juniors has announced an all-new show called Mira, Royal Detective, set to be released in March 2020.  The show will follow the adventures of a bright young girl named Mira, played by 16-year-old Leela Ladnier, in the fictional kingdom of Jalpur. Mira will solve mysteries for both members of the royal household and common people in the kingdom, which has earned her the title of Royal Detective.

IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING! This March my character Pinky (who is obsessed with goats) and the rest of the Mira gang premiere in the new @disneyjunior animated series Mira, Royal Detective. The show is a funny educational mystery-adventure show inspired by the cultures and customs of India. Set in the fictional land of Jalpur, it follows Mira, a commoner who is appointed to the role of royal detective by the queen herself. Oh and I sing. About goats. Apologies in advance. 🐐 💕

Each episode will feature two 11-minute stories and many of them will spotlight music, dance, and customs that are rooted in Indian heritage. However, the most exciting part about the show is that it has a star-studded cast. Freida Pinto will play Queen Shanti and Jameela Jamil will lend her voice to Mira’s Auntie Pushpa. Kal Penn and Utkarsh Ambudkar will fill in for Mikku and Chikku respectively, while Aasif Mandvi will do voiceover for Mira’s father.

Other than this, Kamran Lucas who has been on the Disney roster since 2016 with TV series Mech-X4, will star as Prince Neel—Mira’s best friend. And, Hannah Simone, who played the role of Cece in New Girl, will also be a part of the show.

We will not lie—we’re absolutely excited to see Disney make an all-desi show.
