Our Editor-In-Chief, Kamna Malik On What Inspired The ELLE Anniversary Issue

2020.
A year that taught us the true meaning of life.
A year that taught us gratitude and kindness.
A year that taught us the importance of little things. A year that changed everything…

As we move on, we are all asking these questions: Where does the world go from here? Are things ever going to be the same? I don’t think anyone has a straight answer but I am sure everyone is looking forward to 2021 with immense hope and positivity. We all need to put the past behind and find new reasons to celebrate and cherish life.

At ELLE, we have multiple reasons to rejoice this month−ELLE India celebrates its 24th Anniversary and ELLE International completes 75 successful years of redefining fashion across the globe.

The birth of ELLE, at the end of the Second World War, marked a new era for women. Born in France, it gave women a platform to express freely and reveal their true personalities. For 75 years, designers, celebrities, supermodels and photographers from around the world have been presenting the most beautiful stories and have given the magazine its distinct identity. Today, it is a beautiful saga of a great artistic family, where fashion is both a serious and playful affair. Apart from being a forerunner and trendsetter for fashion, beauty and lifestyle, ELLE has also stood strong alongside women on social issues that genuinely matter. This is what I think sets it apart. For me, ELLE has always been a fashion magazine with a thought and am proud to be a part of this family.

To commemorate this landmark year, we decided to do something special. We reached out to 18 personalities (women and some men), each distinguished in their respective fields, and asked them their opinion on how they see the future. Whether it is reducing social and economic inequalities, fighting against climate change, ensuring child education, protecting professional journalism and reliable information, or maintaining a cultural life−we got them to imagine the world to come. Do read our special section Voices: #ImaginingTheWorldToBe and see what icons like Karuna Nundy, Faye DSouza, Roshini Vadehra, Shefali Shah, Rajesh Pratap Singh and many others have to say.

This isn’t all. We also have some more powerhouses in this issue−the woman of the hour, Kamala Harris; the suave and sexy Giorgio Armani; TIME magazine’s Kid of the year Gitanjali Rao; the very charming Sir Paul Smith, and of course, our cover star Taapsee Pannu. Having spent a decade in movies, Taapsee is still someone who firmly has her head on her shoulders. Opinionated, bold and curious, she makes for the perfect ELLE cover star.

And lastly, before I sign off, I hope 2021 is kinder, happier and above all healthier for each of us. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “May your choices reflect your hopes and not your fears.” Happy Birthday ELLE and Happy New Year to all of you! Wishing you light, happiness and love.
